Abstract

Summary

The study provides a detailed retrospective analysis of the field of watershed hydrology, which studies the structure of river networks based on the geomorphological zoning of the basin. The main theoretical foundations of the field and stages of development, conceptual features of methods of identification and codification of river catchments are revealed. The state of research both in the world and in Ukraine is briefly characterized. In addition, the structure of the river network of the Siverskyi Donets is analysed in terms of the relationship between microscale complexity and macro-scale simplification in its mapping. It is proved that a smaller map scale reflects a larger number of system elements and corresponds to the real configuration of the watershed as much as possible, which directly affects the size of the watercourse order, and, accordingly, the calculation parameters based on it.
