Abstract

Summary

This work demonstrates the possibilities of geoinformation mapping of forest cover in the territory of Ukraine based on remote sensing data (RS) to create interactive thematic cartographic models and obtain necessary semantic information about the forest cover. The main features, properties, and characteristics of forest cover as a mapping indicator have been studied. It is proven that the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) functionality and RS data for geoinformation mapping of forest cover is sufficiently effective for conducting inventory and assessment works in forestry. This will facilitate the transition to sustainable forest management and rational use of available forest resources in the future. The main types of data for geoinformation mapping of forest cover are defined, including spectral index images, channel combinations, and global digital maps of forested areas. The use of these data allowed the development of a software application with functions for analyzing forest cover based on spectral index images. The application enables the combination of 4 index images using Sentinel-2 satellite data for local analysis of forest cover conditions over a specified period. The developed application operates on the Google Earth Engine software and is publicly accessible via the URL link: https://liliaslichnaia.users.earthengine.app/view/forest-cover-analysis.
