Abstract

Summary

The benefits obtained by controlling soil erosion are called ecosystem services (ES) control of erosion rates (CER). The purpose of this paper is to present the technological features of assessment ESCER.

In accordance with factors that determine the soil loss due to erosion and deflation, a geodatabase was formed on the preconditions for their occurrence in the Kyiv green areas, the volume of ESCER and the risks of their loss. The QGIS/SAGA (QGIS version 3.32.1-Lima) was chosen as a spatial analysis tool for calculating ES. The file database of ES assessment, in the GeoPackage format in accordance with the standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium, was formed by geodata sets: “LS”, “Vegetation”, “Soils_erosion” and “BGI_erosion”. The deflation risk assessment methodology and the ABAG model were chosen as they are based on the use of available and reliable indicators. The study quantified the effectiveness of UGS in performing erosion control function (MBA), the amount of ecosystem service (ES_er_contr), and the risks of its loss today (R_er_contr) and in the future (R_pot). Open-source GIS, clear algorithms for calculating geodata, and the availability of input information create the conditions under ES assessment becomes accessible to urban planners.
