Abstract

Summary

To compare different palaeoclimate proxies as suitable indicators of environmental changes, two loess-palaeosol sections in the Middle Dnipro area, Gunky and Zamozhne, were studied using combined lithopedological (including micromorphological) and rock magnetic methods. The Gunky site is well known for palaeontological data from its basal fluvial deposits that are correlated with the Likhvin (MIS 11, Early Zavadivka) times. The other age marker was provided by the Dnipro glacial and glacio-lacustrine deposits (MIS 6). The two well-developed interglacial pedocompexes between these markers (MIS 9 and MIS 7) are well correlated in both sites. The complete sequence of the Upper Pleistocene deposits was also studied, as well as Lower Middle Pleistocene units, represented by Tyligul loess and the complete Lubny pedocomplex. Rock magnetic and lithopedological data correspond very well in their palaeoclimatic implication. Despite individual features of interglacial successions, a common regular trend can clearly be seen in soil and climatic changes during all the interglacials. This fact can be used for elaboration of a prognosis of coming changes, which should occur under natural factors during the modern Holocene interglacial.
