Abstract

Summary

The stability of the host rock in underground mineral deposit mining depends on multiple factors, particularly the physical and mechanical properties of the rocks and the stress state of the massif. Rocks are primarily affected by the gravitational field and are subject to lithostatic loading, which may be superimposed by technogenic and tectonic stresses. Unlike lithostatic pressure, tectonic stresses are not uniformly distributed and may be concentrated in certain areas of the massif resulting in increased rock pressure or gas-dynamic phenomena within the mine workings. It is therefore important to consider the tectonic stress component when assessing the stress state of the massif. By using fault-slip stress inversion, the author aims to extend the interpretation of the tectonic history of the Horlivka anticline, the most explored segment of the Main anticline of the Donbas due to the coal mining operations, and to understand how tectonic stress fields impact the safety and efficiency coal mining. This study contributes to the understanding of the factors behind the catastrophic rock collapse in the l coal seam face at the Novodzerzhynska mine, the westernmost coal mine within the western periclinal closure of the Horlivka anticline, Central Donbas.
