Abstract

Summary

Cold waves as a meteorological phenomenon pose a significant threat to human activities and therefore require daily attention and in-depth study. As there is considerable climate change occurring due to modern warming conditions, and the geographical location of our country contributes to the development of this phenomenon, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of contemporary cold waves in Ukraine. The main research results were obtained through the identification and climatological processing of cases of significant air temperature decrease in Ukraine during the period of 2001–2020. To identify such cases, climatological normal data for air temperature in 1981–2010 were used. The paper presents and analyzes quantitative characteristics of cold waves in 10 cities of Ukraine. The main focus is given to cases of the longest and strongest cold spells in Ukraine.
