Abstract

Summary

The paper presents the study of the disaster area in southern Ukraine after the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP dam in June 2023. The study demonstrates the possibilities of using Sentinel-1A IW Level-1 GRD products to detect both flooding and shallowing processes in the disaster area. A significant advantage of Sentinel-1 data selection is the ability to conduct radar imagery in any weather and at any time of the day. The data processing includes 2 main stages: preprocessing of satellite images and pre-event and post-event images RGB composition. The applied approach made it possible to study the dynamics of the flooding area downriver the Kakhovka dam and shallowing in the Kakhovka Reservoir during June 2023.
