Abstract

Summary

Closely associated iron minerals (magnetite, hematite, goethite) of the Ukrainian BIF-hosted deposits (Kryvyi Rih Basin and Kremenchuk district) are considered within the framework of a single Fe-FeO-FeO-HO system. A simplified model of changes in the major component composition of iron ore minerals vs Fe (total) and the corresponding equations for calculation of Fe, FeO, FeO and HO content in magnetites, hematites and goethites (related by gradual transitions) based on the microprobe determined Fe (total) content was developed. The test result confirmed the validity of the proposed equations, however their successful application depends on the precision and accuracy of electron microprobe analysis (stability of the electron beam). Proposed equations can be easily modified to calculate the ratios Fe – Wus – Mag – Hem – Ght – Gth•nHO in each analytical spot and local micro-level assessment of the magnetic properties of ore minerals using known values for mineral components (micro-level mapping of magnetic susceptibility etc.). Such information will significantly increase the reliability of ore quality assessment.
