Abstract

Summary

This study describes the possibilities and prospects of using GIS to analyze the conditions of water flow formation in urban conditions. The use of GIS makes it possible to assess the current state of the city from hydrological perspective, to conduct preliminary assessments of the green infrastructure implementation effectiveness etc. This is also the stage of data preparation for further water flow modelling.

The object of the study is the city of Trebišov, easternmost part of Slovakia. During the research were determined storm water runoff coefficient and expected water flow for every defined sewer network subcatchment in the inner city. Were developed three alternative scenarios for green infrastructure implementation and analyzed changes according to each of them, comparing with current conditions. Alternatives considered implementation of green roofs on large buildings and replacement of asphalt coverage with permeable pavement, transformation covered up to 11.3% of the entire territory.

The results of the research showed that the implementation of green infrastructure could help to reduce total runoff by almost 10%, while in some subcatchments the reduction could exceed 30%. The most significant changes affect Trebišov central districts and large industrial areas.
