Abstract

Summary

Open source software applications, particularly GIS, have been used in the field of geology for decades in both research and teaching at the University of Urbino. The experiences described range from field survey cases to cartographic processing and 3D printing of geological models. The history of their use and development is littered with failed attempts and slowdowns, but the idea of using digital tools in areas where they are traditionally frowned upon, such as in field geology, is now entrenched and validated by applications in projects of various types.
