Abstract

Summary

This study investigates the geological implications of plume magmatism Seaward Dipping Reflectors (SDRs) related and pre rift magmatism in the Pelotas and Punta del Este basins, focusing on the economic potential of volcanic passive margins. SDR and pre-rift rocks and samples from the Pelotas and Punta del Este basins were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence and mass spectrometry, revealing alkali basalts in the SDRs, also this rocks record a plume-related source that assimilated the continental crust. The pre-rift rocks exhibit sub-alkaline characteristics with some alkali basalts, we asume which are plume-related magmatism with continental crust contamination. The presence of SDRs influenced by plume activity in the region suggests the potential for shallowly buried hydrocarbon reservoirs, making even shallow regions of the basins attractive for exploration. Additionally, the identification of a mantle thermal anomaly highlights the need for thermal modeling to assess its impact on organic matter maturation. This research provides valuable insights into the geological evolution of the Gondwana breakup and the economic significance of volcanic passive margins, contributing to assessments and exploration activities in the Pelotas and Punta del Este basins.
