Abstract

Summary

A new paleoenvironmental and sequence stratigraphic model for the Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous interval is proposed in the southeastern West Malvinas Basin, aiming to unlock important remaining potential in a basin center location.

From the integration of 3D seismic data together with 2D regional seismic lines and wells, detailed interpretation of second and third order stratigraphic sequences and their seismic characterization have been performed.

Three second order megasequences have been defined from the Lower Jurassic to Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary: Megasequence 1 from Late Triassic(?) to Tithonian, megasequence 2 from Berriasian to Aptian and megsequence 3 from Albian to Late Cretaceous.

The syn-rift megasequence 1 is characterized by continental to paralic paleoenvironments with evidence of the first marine transgression into the basin.

For the Lower Cretaceous megasequences 2, fluvial to shallow marine paleoenvironments, in an overall transgressive sag sequence set have been recognized. Delta front systems have been developing intermittently.

After a mid-Cretaceous unconformity and during the passive margin stage, the basin deepened enough as to develop a shelf to shelf slope related environment, predominantly filled with sands in the lower part of the interval and pelagic background sedimentation in the upper one.
