The aim of this paper is to highlight the indispensable significance of the geophysical and geological surveys to determine the typology of seismicity, the source parameters of the earthquakes in order to shed light on the seismotectonics of the Kurbnesh-Kukes-Prizren cross-border transversal fault. The Kurbnesh-Kukes-Prizren tectonic fault extends in a southwest-northeast orientation, spanning approximately 90 km and inclining towards the northwest. This tectonic fault zone is classified as a normal fault, combined to strike-slip components.
Analysis of some features of seismic activity of Kurbnesh-Kukes-Prizren fault zone are presented in this paper. The June 16th, 1456 earthquake of Prizreni with Ms of 6.0 has been the most important earthquake. During the period 1456–2023, along these seismic belts, have been generated fifteen (15) seismic events with magnitude from 4.5 to 7.
Damage caused by these earthquakes has been, in some cases, significantly worsened by the characteristics of the earthquake ground motion affected by the local subsurface soil structure of the cities works.
In the process of creating earthquake-resistant cities, the geophysical and engineering-geological methods, which take into account the geological and geomorphological characteristics of the local subsoil, could be fundamental.
