The national oil company ANCAP is performing a desktop study of the Uruguayan offshore wind to hydrogen potential, involving the selection of suitable areas for bottom fixed offshore wind taking into account social and environmental constraints, and the assessment of the wind resource potential of each area. In following stages, the study will address the specific soil and environmental conditions of the areas, to identify additional constraints for the installation of turbines and marine infrastructure, and update the layout for each area. The aim is to integrate and optimise offshore wind to hydrogen production models, to identify technical challenges and to perform an economic assessment. This article shows the progress of the desktop study, on a joint research project with the national technical university UTEC, to produce an updated evaluation of the offshore wind potential in four areas selected as the most suitable for bottom fixed offshore wind to hydrogen production. Results of this study show a world class potential for offshore wind in Uruguay, in agreement with public databases but with a higher spatial resolution.
