Abstract

Summary

Geothermal energy, as a renewable source of energy, has been a hot topic in recent years, especially because of the need for fossil fuel consumption reductions because of their negative effects on water, air, and soil (1). Humanity needs more energy than ever, and every aspect of modern life is impacted by energy in some way (2), so geothermal energy could play a pivotal role in the process of sustainable development in some areas or even entire countries (3) because of the fact that its potential is inexhaustible and it can provide a constant and reliable source of energy and power. Geothermal energy as a source of energy has been known since ancient times (4), but starting from the beginning of this century, a great number of countries have been using geothermal sources of energy as a new energy source in their energy networks (5). According to (5), Serbia has great potential for the usage of geothermal energy as one of the renewable sources of energy. This can be confirmed by the fact that the average heat flow density in Serbia is higher than 100 mW/m2 (6), compared to the average heat flow density in the entire continental Europe, which is around 60 mW/m2 (5, 7). But, according to (8), geothermal energy and its resources are not used to the full extent of their potential in Serbia. This paper will give a brief review of the potential and usage of geothermal energy in Serbia. According to Figures from the paper, it can be clearly seen that Serbia has a great potential for both shallow and deep geothermal resources.
