Abstract

Summary

During this century the Albanian and its surrounding seismicity is dominated by one strong earthquake M L 6.3, its compound sequence, and by 17 moderate earthquakes (Mw = 5.0 – 5.6). The most active fault zones are as follow: 1. Durrës - Lezhë , 2. Lezhë - Ulqin, 3. Thethi, 4. Kurbnesh-Skavic, 5. Bulqiz-Macukull 6. Lushnje-Elbasan-Diber 7. Vlorë - Tepelenë, 9. Ionian fault zone (most active the segment Borsh - Kardhiq) 10. Korce -Leskovik. Albania territory has a high seismic hazard as highlighted also by the November 26, 2019, Durres earthquake (Mw6.4) and with effects in the Durres-Tirana-Lezha zone. The focal mechanisms solution of the strongest earthquake and 17 moderate earthquakes indicate stress regime in Albania. The analysis of main aspects of seismicity during this century enable us for correct interpretations of seismotectonics, geodynamic phenomena of the Earth's crust and most upper mantel and seismic hazard assessment.
