We will introduce an example of a physical exploration method using a penetrator. In particular, we will mainly introduce the penetrator used in Antarctica. Penetrators can be used as observation stations [1]. Many of the places where it is used are places that people cannot access (Unmanned-Places). Penetrators have rarely been used in Antarctica; the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) used it in 2003 (JARE43), but due to power supply problems, it was not possible to conduct any observations. Therefore, it cannot be said that penetrators can be used in Antarctica. We confirmed three elements in Antarctica. It is penetration-observation-communication. These elements are important components of the penetrator. Regarding the elements of penetration, we investigated the drop height and penetration depth. The observational element was achieved by being able to observe infrasound and seismic waves. The communication element was achieved by acquiring GPS logs. Penetrators can be used anywhere. Therefore, we can have more observation points. I hope that this post will make penetrators an option for readers’ observation methods.
