Abstract

Summary

This study presents the Borehole Portable Active Seismic Source (B-PASS) system, which is intended for continuous active seismic operations in boreholes. It may be used for cross-hole and uphole surveys for geological imaging and monitoring, where CO2 storage reservoirs are among the facilities that are targeted. B-PASS uses stacked signals to dramatically improve the signal-to-noise ratio, making it possible for long monitoring. With the use of a hydraulic press to hold the seismic source in place within the borehole, B-PASS uses seismic sweeps with a wide frequency range that may be customized to meet specific imaging or monitoring objectives. Its efficacy was shown in field tests conducted in a northern Japanese at Niigata, where signals traveled around 450 meters horizontally from the well and reached a temporal resolution of about 4 hours. The stability test, which lasted for 2250 sweeps, demonstrated constant dependability and a stable waveform. In summary, B-PASS provides crucial insights for enhancing imaging and monitoring in challenging underground conditions. With its unique design, proven success in the field, and potential to revolutionize seismic monitoring, this tool promises to boost the safety of the borehole.
