Sensitivity analysis with a mixed-dimensional forward model for DC resistivity investigations of landfills

We present preliminary results related to the capability of the DC resistivity method to analyse the conditions of the liner placed below MSWLFs and to detect leachate leakage when using electrode spreads deployed around the landfill body. More in detail, we implement a sensitivity analysis in our newly developed mixed dimensional code that represents the liner as a 2D element in the considered 3D domain.

By considering all possible electrode configurations given a deployed spread, we simulate a very simple and downscaled setting with a damaged liner and observe that sensitivity values decay when moving away from the electrodes, as expected. However, sensitivity significantly increases when adding an electrode inside the waste body. Further testing with other settings is needed to consider liners with and without damages, different landfill geometries, number, size and location of liner damages, heterogeneous media, and different electrode spreads. Then, the sensitivity values could be statistically analysed to robustly evaluate the effectiveness of the geoelectrical methods for monitoring MSWLFs. To make field surveys practically feasible, the quadrupoles with maximum sensitivity values in the zones of interest should be selected among all the possible quadrupoles configurations, given a deployed spread.
