Abstract

Summary

Coastal regions, vital for sustainable development, pose challenges for traditional survey techniques due to their shallow and complex environments. To address these challenges, ultra-high-resolution seismic surveys have been proposed, but their implementation in shallow waters remains limited. Ocean bottom cable (OBC) methods, utilizing fiber optic cables for direct wave recording, offer an alternative approach. This study conducted a small marine survey in Youngil Bay, Korea, deploying bottom-type air-gun/dynamite sources and fiber optic cables on the seabed. Side scan sonar mapping traced the fiber optic cable (400m), with synchronized GPS-equipped vessels facilitating data acquisition. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) records exhibited clear wave patterns, indicating the feasibility of this approach for cost-effective OBC surveys in coastal regions. By integrating fiber optic cables with DAS, enhanced resolution and reduced costs can be achieved, offering significant potential for advancing marine survey capabilities and supporting sustainable coastal development.
