Abstract

Summary

The Central Luconia province is located off the coast of Borneo in Sarawak Malaysia. The Middle Miocene to Upper Miocene, Cycle-IV/V Carbonate reservoirs is one of the most prolific gas play in the region. This study aims to demonstrate how the analytical interpretation of gas compositional and carbon isotopic data is crucial in determining the true causes responsible for the hydrocarbon column retention and demonstrate how geochemistry gas data integration can assist in providing qualitative top seal assessment in the play analysis and prospects’ ranking.

When drilling results from exploring the Cycle-IV/V Carbonate play, have shown a hydrocarbon column height to be less than the trap spill-point, it is a general opinion to label the finding as “charge inadequacy”. This is mostly derived from the “misassumption” that a given hydrocarbon column is constrained only by the mechanical top-seal strength, which typically defines a much greater hydrocarbon column height in comparison to the actual accumulations, discovered in the Central Luconia Cycle-IV/V carbonate.
