Abstract

Summary

Despite a long history of exploration and production in the Baram Delta, there remains significant untapped potential. Specifically, the shelf edge area along the West Baram Line, at the level of the younger geological layers of Cycle VI and VII, includes a new generation of play types for the discovery of economically viable gas reservoirs.

This study used the inductive (evidence-based) sequence stratigraphy (T-R sequence) method by Embry & Johannesen, 2017 instead of deductive methods (eustasy approach by Vail, Haq, and others) to address the nonlinear sedimentation history and constant change of accommodation space across fault blocks.

P-1 well, drilled in 2022, had discovered gas accumulation at six stacked reservoir-seal pairs within Cycle VI near the shelf edge area of the Baram Delta. This play type is characterised by thick growth fault sedimentation, subsequently predicting facies and sand presence into undrilled areas with broad sedimentation type from coastal plains to open marine environments.
