Carbon storage prospect assessment methodologies and standards need to be created. Even though they share some components with oil and gas workflows (trap, pore volume), they became quickly different with the need for integration of PVT and seal. The injection into “open aquifers” is completely new and requires a new type of unstructured assessment unit: the plume.
The containment risk is new to the industry since the fluid column or plume is yet to be created and cannot be quickly validated as for oil and gas prospects. Higher storage efficiencies need to be balanced with as little as acceptable containment risk when deciding for a given development scenario. Also, both are not a single pre-drill number, but evolve through time during injection.
