Abstract

Summary

The application of seismic attribute techniques helps to reveal characteristics that is masked by using amplitude data themselves, and allows better geological interpretation of formation, particularly in channels and thin bed reservoir environments. This study aims to identify the best attribute to characterise channel geomorphology delineation and to describe fluvial channels, geometry, heterogeneity, and properties of fluvial reservoirs in identified prospects of North Malay Basin through the application of seismic attributes. The methodological approach conducted includes correlation and evaluation of wireline logs, seismic interpretation, extraction of seismic attributes, as well as geological interpretation of 3-dimensional seismic data. The seismic attributes employed are frequency spectral decomposition, cosine of phase, variance and relative acoustic impedance attributes, RMS Amplitude and Envelope. The combination of multiple attributes provides precise prediction on the geomorphology, dimensions, flow orientations and type of fluvial systems in the study area. The result in this study concludes that the spectral decomposition attribute with RGB blending of 17Hz, 35Hz and 55Hz displays the best results for channel geomorphology delineation. The identification of fluvial channels and geomorphology in this study is relevant for better reservoir distribution prediction and characterisation towards building a realistic geological model for flow simulation.
