Abstract

Summary

Fiber-optic monitoring using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology, offers innovative solutions for the real-time monitoring of onshore pipelines. This study focuses on a 60 km gas pipeline in Southwestern France equipped with fiber optic cables and served as a testbed for DAS technology. The DAS interrogator generated dual data streams with different gauge lengths, enabling the exploration of two key applications: detecting third-party interferences and monitoring seismic activity. We successfully detected unauthorized activities, such as excavation, using AI algorithms to classify events and provide immediate alerts to operators. The system also captured both natural and induced seismic events, including a magnitude 2.6 earthquake in the Pyrenees Mountain range and a magnitude 1.4 event near Lacq facilities, demonstrating the potential of DAS to complement traditional seismic networks. Integration into existing seismic infrastructures via SeedLink protocol can enhance data sharing and monitoring coverage. This work highlights the versatility of DAS to ensure pipeline safety, improving seismic monitoring, and contributing to linear infrastructure resilience.
