Innovative projects like CEEGS (CO2-based Electrothermal Energy and Geological Storage Systems) and CRM-Geothermal projects are a part of exploring and expanding new applications for geothermal energy, in line with the EU priorities of reducing fossil fuel consumption and achieving zero CO2 emissions by integrating renewable resources into the energy mix.
CEEGS focuses on using a transcritical CO2 cycle for underground energy storage and CO2 sequestration, aiming for a negative carbon footprint and versatile energy applications. It consists of three development phases: demonstrating feasibility, building a powerful demonstrator, and achieving commercial viability.
On the other hand, CRM-Geothermal seeks to extract critical raw materials from geothermal fluids. This method addresses the EU’s need for strategic resource autonomy while minimizing environmental impacts and carbon footprints compared to conventional mining. The project will develop a comprehensive database of critical raw materials and establish sustainable extraction technologies. Both projects highlight the broader potential of geothermal energy for sustainable development, aligning with the European Green Deal and climate change initiatives. The CEEGS project aims to enhance energy storage solutions, while CRM-Geothermal integrates raw material extraction with geothermal energy utilization. Together, they promise significant advancements in technology, environmental sustainability, and energy independence.
