In this case study from the Norwegian North Sea, we demonstrate how applying a modern high-frequency Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) workflow to ocean-bottom seismic data can significantly improve the migrated image, both in terms of imaging quality and prediction of depth structures. These improvements are particularly crucial when small changes in the migration velocity model can have a substantial impact on field-development decisions. A customized approach to building the anisotropy model, based on existing qualitative and quantitative geological data, further enhanced the inverted velocity model. Optimizing the FWI workflow and the input anisotropy models led to the complete elimination of global reflection tomography, while still achieving flat gathers and minimal well-to-seismic mismatches.
