The Regional Pedagogy Program (RPP) in the Nereidas Valley, Caldas, Colombia, exemplifies the intersection of community engagement and sustainable geothermal energy development. Initiated by the Asociación Colombiana de Geólogos y Geofísicos de la Energía (ACGGP) in collaboration with Ecopetrol and CHEC, the RPP focuses on educating and involving local communities in the geothermal energy transition. Through the concept of “Diálogo de Saberes” (Dialogue of Knowledge), the program bridges scientific knowledge with local wisdom, fostering trust and inclusivity.
The Nereidas Valley Geothermal Project is the first high-enthalpy, volcano-related geothermal initiative in Colombia and the first to be developed within a páramo ecosystem. This sensitive environment represents challenges such as regulatory complexities, seismic risks, and community trust. However, it also offers opportunities to diversify the Colombian energy matrix, advance scientific research, and support local economic activities like agriculture and livestock through cascading geothermal uses.
Community-centered activities, including muralism and ecological walks, highlight the rich biodiversity and geodiversity of the region. These initiatives emphasize the need to understand and protect local ecosystems. The RPP sets a benchmark for inclusive and sustainable energy projects, showcasing how pedagogy and dialogue can pave the way for harmonizing technology, society, and environmental stewardship.
