Abstract

Summary

In this contribution, we demonstrate how web-based reservoir simulation can enable a collaboration between the involved parties – storage operators, service companies, national geologic surveys, and regulators – in order to agree on a dynamic storage capacity estimate, associated with an optimal CO2 injection strategy. To this end, we develop a web portal, where the involved parties can refine a reservoir model of a storage unit, launch dynamic simulations, and visualize the results.

Building of a reservoir model follows a standard geomodelling workflow: starting with a set of horizons, the model extent is defined via GIS-based interface, the obtained 3D reservoir model is populated with rock properties, and wells’ injection schedule is defined. The final model is run on the server side and the results are visualized via web browser. All steps are implemented using open-source tools, which enable cross-checking and eventual corrections by the involved parties.
