Abstract

Summary

CO2CRC’s Otway International Test Centre (OITC) has been pivotal in advancing onshore CO2 geological storage technologies, supporting Australia’s CCUS aspirations. Located in southwest Victoria, the OITC leverages its proximity to the Buttress CO2 gas field and unique geological features, including saline aquifers and depleted reservoirs, to validate and optimise CO2 storage solutions. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure includes purpose-drilled wells, advanced monitoring technologies, and regulatory-approved experimental capabilities, making it a global hub for CCUS innovation.

The Otway Stage 3 program demonstrated cost-effective monitoring techniques, including pressure tomography and downhole seismic, achieving precise CO2 plume detection with minimal environmental impact. Building on this success, the ongoing Otway Stage 4 program focuses on reservoir management and storage optimisation, aiming to reduce costs and enhance the viability of CO2 storage in diverse geological settings.

With nearly two decades of expertise, the OITC serves as a trusted resource for the global CCUS community, combining rigorous research, technological innovation, and strong community engagement.
