Abstract

Summary

This study explores the use of seismic reflection methods to enhance geothermal exploration in Romania, focusing on the Beiuș geothermal field. The common approach, based on surface and well-based geological observations, geochemistry, and resistivity methods, provides limited subsurface resolution, while seismic techniques have the potential to offer improved imaging, thus reducing exploration risks. Using the Probability of Geological Success (Pg) metric, the study evaluates the likelihood of identifying viable geothermal reservoirs with commercial flow rates using seismic techniques. Synthetic seismic data, generated from geological models, are used to assess seismic detection capabilities of reservoir depth, fracture status, and fluid content. The findings demonstrate that seismic methods can enhance reservoir localization and reduce exploration risks. The study recommends further validation, by using real seismic data and broader regional application for geothermal prospecting in Romania.

This research was conducted under the auspices of the project “Driving Sustainable Urban Futures: A Romanian-Norwegian Innovation Geophysical Alliance for Green Transition and SMART City Development”, for which permission was granted by Innovation Norway, Pre Stack Solutions-Geo, and the University of Bucharest.
