This research applied ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to investigate an underwater archaeological site called Cabeludo, located in the Maranhão State, eastern Brazilian Amazon. There are several archaeological sites in this region characterized by pre-colonial stilt villages with well-preserved ceramic artifacts. Previous archaeological studies identified over 1,150 stilts in the riverbed at the Cabeludo site. Here, a 270 MHz GPR was employed to map the known stilts and potentially identify new ones. The radargrams show a clear reflection from the riverbed and several diffraction hyperbolas in the water column near the riverbed, which are most likely associated with the top of stilts. Our results can help to guide the search for new archaeological materials and contribute to advancing the understanding about this unique cultural heritage in the Amazon region.
