The risk from UXO to offshore construction projects is highly complex, at the same time the knowledge base in form of research and independent studies on various aspects of this risk has increased. However, the way the risk assessments are performed has not developed significantly since the first large scale offshore wind farms were built in the early 2010s. A project has therefore been initiated to develop a software tool to perform risk assessments in an objective and systematic way incorporating the latest knowledge and research using a risk assessment method suitable for assessing highly complex risks, the BowTie method.
The project aims to decrease the overall Health, Safety and Environmental risk for offshore construction projects by assessing all risks related to UXO, e.g. the risk of an explosion including the probability of this happening and the risk imbedded in the control measure implemented to avoid this, e.g. inspection and clearance. The resulting assessment will show which control measures are reasonable in lowering the risk to an acceptable level, i.e. ALARP.
