Recent exploration using high-resolution multibeam echo-sounders (MBES) and ROV technology in 2020 has provided interesting insights into the Angitola Canyon, located within the complex Calabro-Tyrrhenian margin. This new data unveils significant morphological features and active geological processes. The surveys specifically showed widespread evidence of instability across the canyon system. This includes observations of subtle scarps indicative of slow-moving erosion (creeping) at the canyon’s upper boundaries, alongside deeply incised erosional features along the flanks, resembling terrestrial badlands and pointing to ongoing erosion.
This study underscores high-resolution data’s value for unravelling the complex interplay of volcanic, tectonic, and sedimentary factors governing canyon evolution and stability, which are crucial information for geohazard assessment and future monitoring.
