Abstract

Summary

This study aims at characterizing the internal structure of the pseudorelict rock glacier of Sadole, Italy. In particular, the main objective is to confirm the presence of permafrost and to map its depth and lateral extension. For this purpose, both Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) have been applied. Results are consistent, identifying an ice-bearing layer in the Middle lobe, and not in the lateral (East and West) lobes. This frozen layer is laterally discontinuous, suggesting variable fractions of ice and liquid water, and is located at a depth of 7 m to 11 m. Further ERT and passive seismic analyses are needed in the future to give a better understanding of the internal structure and composition of the rock glacier, and to monitor the seasonal thawing and freezing processes, together with the possible future permafrost degradation.
