Brazil has significant experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS) since the mid-1990s, especially in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) through Petrobras projects. Notable developments include the Buracica Field, the largest CCS initiative globally, capturing 30.1 million tons of CO2 since 2008, and the Santos Basin Pre-salt oil field.
To enhance CO2 migration monitoring, Petrobras created the Barra do Furado Fieldlab (BFL) for controlled injection experiments as part of the Cabiunas-São Tomé CCS Pilot Project. The BFL includes one CO2 injection well and three monitoring wells, aiming to inject approximately 350000 tonnes of supercritical CO2 into a sandstone reservoir at about 1200 m depth from 2027 to 2029.
We recommend the gravimetric method for cost-effective monitoring of CO2 injection, which was validated through a feasibility study showing that gravitational responses from the CO2 plume exceed 1 μGal after two years.
