The MNZ project is a plan to repurpose the existing Morecambe South methane gas field in the UK’s Irish Sea Basin for carbon sequestration. Whilst the initial phase is focusing on recovering CO2 via a pipeline, Spirit Energy has investigated the development of a liquified carbon dioxide (LCO2) terminal at its South Morecambe Terminal (SMT) to receive ship-transported CO2. To achieve this the liquified CO2 needs to be heated for regassification ahead of injection into the storage pipeline. This process requires a high heat input, and an initial study has been conducted to evaluate the potential of using Geothermal energy for this operation. The results so far are encouraging and suggests that further work should be conducted.
