Switzerland’s legally mandated net-zero by 2050 demands capturing and storing up to 12 MtCO2/y from hard-to-abate sectors. The purpose of this study is to highlight recent ongoing efforts for the CITru Injection pilot, a first-of-its-kind pilot in the Swiss Upper Muschelkalk saline aquifer. Dynamic TOUGH3 simulations for a 2-year, 10 000 t injection predict significant and rapid CO2 dissolution during and after injection, with full dissolution within 100 years. A Monitoring, Measurement, and Verification (MMV) concept aligned with EU CCS directives screened over a dozen technologies for their capability in evidencing containment and conformance. Combined with dynamic modelling, a preliminary Area-of-Review is outlined and complemented by an induced seismicity assessment, revealing the need for additional seismometer arrays. This work builds towards Phase II of the project, which will carry out a test injection to validate the proposed MMV framework, refine dynamic reservoir models, and assess induced seismicity in situ.
