Abstract

Summary

This study gives a brief overview of the potential for geologic/natural hydrogen in Norway. There are several ophiolite complexes and other rock types that are exposed in Norway as a result of tectonic activities. Examples of these exposed at surface are the Leka ophiolite, the Bymarka ophiolite, etc. These rocks are rich in iron and have the potential for generating hydrogen.

Norway may have good potential for geologic hydrogen based on initial analyses of source rock exposed in various geological provinces. Presence of ophiolites and different types of ultramafic rocks can form source rocks for hydrogen generation in the subsurface. Additionally, there are deep-seated fault systems in onshore and offshore Norway that are considered favourable for transportation of generated hydrogen from deep subsurface to potential shallow reservoirs. Possible hydrogen production may have been accumulated in reserves that need investigation to be located/explored. Furthermore, these rocks have a good potential to be stimulated to produce hydrogen. For the latter case, studies should be focused on the present-day geologic setting, and thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions of the feasible source rocks.
