Offshore wind energy remains underdeveloped in North America, particularly in Canada, despite the region’s strong wind potential. However, Nova Scotia province has set a goal to license 5 GW of offshore wind by 2030, initiating its first call for bids in 2025. A regional assessment launched in 2023 identified five suitable areas for wind energy development on the Scotian Shelf and near Cape Breton Island. To support informed decision-making, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) has conducted 10 marine surveys by mid-2025 to address knowledge gaps related to seabed geology, sediment mobility, geohazards, and infrastructure feasibility. The research includes physical, mineralogical, and geochemical characterization of seabed sediments, with a focus on understanding sediment sources, transport dynamics, and potential hazards. One concern is the presence of glauconite, which may hinder monopile installation. In addition, the presence of boulders was identified in several sites, potentially complicating engineering tasks like foundation placement and cable trenching.
