The Cheshire Basin in north west England contains two Triassic bedded salt deposits in the Northwich and Wilkesley Halite Members of the Mercia Mudstone Group. These stratigraphic members are composed of interbedded halite and mudstone and solution mined caverns constructed within the Northwich Halite Member are currently used for natural gas storage. In this study a new regional interpretation of the Northwich Halite Member is integrated with an analysis of eligible land to show where new caverns could be located, as part of using a hydrogen-based fuel system to help the United Kingdom decarbonisation strategy.
