Abstract
Project CO2NSEIS focuses on the development of a pragmatic and fit-for-purpose methodology to consistently screen subsurface hazards and evaluate risks caused by injection of CO2 into the subsurface, such as induced seismicity and loss of geological containment. This development is based on the learnings from the CO2 storage license application process for the Porthos project in 2021 which revealed a need for more clarity w.r.t detailed requirements and consistency in the evaluation of subsurface risks. Such methodology could help support the development of the CCS sector by increased efficiency. Benefits from the application of a transparent and consistent risk assessment workflow should be on both the submitters’ (operators’) as well as the evaluators’ (competent authorities’) side.
