Abstract
In early stages of geological carbon storage (GCS) projects in saline aquifers usually there are no exploratory wells and there is no experimental data about relative permeability (Kr) and capillary pressure (Pc) for the CO2-Brine system. However, this represent an important business challenge, as this information is critical for the rigorous simulation of any GCS project.
A software application “GCS RE Toolkit” was developed to tackle this business challenge. Its main objective is the estimation of Kr and PC curves for the system CO2-Brine in Sandstone formations.
It includes a database containing public and in-house experimental data for the CO2-Brine-Sandstone system, comprising: Drainage and Imbibition Kr core flooding tests, and Drainage Pc tests.
GCS RE Toolkit applies two different methodologies: Machine Learning and Analogues.
Users can visualize Kr/Pc curves and fractional flow graphs for each rock type under study and download an Excel file containing Kr/Pc parameters and tables.
GCS RE Toolkit provides the following benefits:
- Standardization of the process, increasing the accuracy of the results
- Results are not biased by user´s prior experience
- It allows the uncertainty propagation downstream the workflow
- Potential cost reduction in cores acquisition and core flooding/Pc experimental tests
