Abstract

Summary

Our studies reveal an underappreciated mechanism--protection of SOC by metal oxides--that underpins long-term carbon sequestration in wetlands. The accumulation and dynamics of bound OC in wetlands are strongly influenced by vegetational shifts. Incorporating this novel mechanism into models will enhance predictions of wetland SOC dynamics under ongoing global change.
