Abstract

Summary

Petrographic and organic geochemical analyses of Pirin coals (SW Bulgaria) were conducted. Results indicate that peat formation occurred within a water-logged scarcely forested to shrubby mire through the deposition of biomass derived from emerged aquatic macrophytes, mixed with varying proportions of angiosperm and gymnosperm plants and locally ferns. Composition of the terpenoid biomarkers indicates that plants from Betulaceae, Cupressaceae and Pinaceae families were important components of the mesophytic palaeocoenoses within and around the mire.
