Abstract
Mass spectral protocols were developed to improve the resolution of 5ß– and 5a–steranes by exploiting subtle differences in their mass fragment patterns. Selected ion monitoring (SIM) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) were employed to discern the relative proportion of these stereoisomers in a set of mixed standards (C27) and a spiked oil sample. Strong correlation (R2>0.99) and high reproducibility for triplicate analyses (relative standard deviation =1.62 %) were obtained for all parameters reported. These results have recently been published in Organic Geochemistry.
Further development will be made to extend this application to the C29 steranes in order to resolve the 5ß20R isomer from the C29 aßß isomers. The method will then be applied to C28 steranes, where the same co-elution exists.
