Abstract
In southeastern Kuwait, a study focused on unexpected gas flow in traditionally low-potential Lower Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs. Researchers used an integrated petroleum system approach, conducting geochemical analyses and developing a 1D model to investigate anomalies. Solid debris analysis revealed halite and gypsum deposits, indicating brine movement through deep-rooted faults. Furthermore, organic analysis identified immovable asphaltic material, suggesting in situ phase segregation. Additionally, gas isotopic analysis linked hydrocarbons to lower maturity oils typical of the region. Oil fingerprinting showed uniformity with neighboring wells, reflecting shared geological histories. Consequently, the 1D model confirmed source rocks within the early oil window, ruling out intrinsic gas potential. Therefore, this study emphasizes the need for advanced structural assessments to understand reservoir compartmentalization, and it advocates for further 2D modeling to explore these phenomena comprehensively.
