Abstract
In this study, we investigated the paleotemperature trend in the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin in the Carpathians (Poland and Slovakia). We applied a variety of methods based mainly on biomarker ratios, but also Rock-Eval-derived Tmax and rock magnetic methods. In addition, thermal maturity trend of the Mesozoic nappe units from the Tatra Mts. was investigated. The results show that the methylphenanthrene index (MPI1) and the derived Rc are the most efficient parameters in recognizing the broadest maturity spectrum. The highest paleotemperatures were recorded in the Spiš Basin and eastern Tatra Mts. where they reach 230°C. This study points to the necessity of combining different maturity parameters to accurately reconstruct the paleotemperatures. These results are an important advance in our understanding of the geological evolution of sedimentary basins.
