Abstract

Summary

Peatlands are crucial carbon stores, but their response to climate change is poorly understood. One way to explore this is through the analysis of biomarkers. BHPs and GDGTs are commonly used biomarkers for studying the microbial activity that governs peatland carbon cycling. However, it is challenging to measure the stable isotope ratios of these large molecules due to analytical limitations. Consequently, we are developing high-temperature GC-IRMS methods to determine the d13C and d2H values of high molecular weight compounds, with a view to more thoroughly unravelling the complexity of peatland carbon cycling and its climatic interactions.
