Abstract
Summary
Membrane-spanning isoprenoid tetraether lipids (GDGTs) produced by marine archaea serve as the basis for the TEX86 proxy, an organic proxy that is widely used to reconstruct past ocean temperatures. While seawater temperature is the primary driver of archaeal membrane modification and TEX86 variations, laboratory studies indicate that nutrient stress can also increase GDGT cyclization, potentially biasing temperature estimates. In this study, we demonstrate that this “nutrient effect” is preserved in marine sediments and can be distinguished from the temperature signal. Our findings highlight the importance of accounting for nutrient influences in TEX86 temperature calibrations.
